About

Plant Health Solutions is based in Warwickshire, UK (the Heart of England) and is the trading name of Dr. Steven Roberts.

Steve has over 20 years experience as an applied plant pathologist, microbiologist and horticultural scientist. Most of his career has been spent at Horticulture Research International in the UK, leading a team carrying out applied and strategic research in agriculture and horticulture. He now works independently, providing research, consultancy, testing, and diagnostic services for a range of clients. He has a BASIS Certificate - the officially recognised qualification in the UK which allows him to advise on crop protection.

He was awarded a first class B.Sc. (Honours) degree in Agricultural Science (crops) and conducted research for his Ph.D. on Bacterial diseases of woody ornamental plants at The University of Leeds, UK. After a brief period at Rothamsted Experimental Station working on an overseas project on novel diagnostic methods, he moved to HRI in 1987.

Perhaps best known for his expertise on bacterial plant pathogens and seed health testing., Steve's research has covered a range of crops and pathogens with topics including: taxonomy and identification, aetiology, quantitative epidemiology, resistance breeding and genetics, seed pathology, pesticide degradation, shelf-life and food safety. Crops have included: brassicas, legumes (peas and beans), lettuce, salad crops, onions, tomatoes, perennials, hardy nursery stock (HNS), apples, cherries. He has produced over 100 publications and has regularly been invited to speak at grower meetings, national and international scientific conferences.

Dr. Roberts was, for many years, an active member of the International Seed Testing Association - Seed Health Committee, is a member of the BCPC seed treatment working group and an editor of New Disease Reports for the British Society of Plant Pathology.
